Natan Elkanovich - Designer

_Natan Elkanovich is a Russian born designer, but moved to Israel with his family at 10 years old. He earned his fashion design degree at the Shenkar School of Engineering and Design in Tel-Aviv. After graduating, he worked as a senior costume designer for the Israeli Motion Picture and Television industry. He put up his first drawing exhibition in 1999 and now has a permanent exhibition of his work in a gallery in Tel-Aviv.
_The way in which Elkanovich uses his media is very unique. He combines acrylic and silicone on canvas to create the 3d effect in his work. He uses a pastry piping bag and an acrylic-silicone mix to create the portraits of his icons; piping the contours and shadows of their faces. His style gives his work a pop-art feel. His technique is extremely creative.

Poul Lange - Designer

_Poul Lange is a Danish illustrator, graphic designer, photographer, and children’s book creator, who has lived in New York since the 1990s. He started his own design firm in 1991 called Poul Lange Design. The majority of his work includes book covers and editorial designs. He teaches design in both New York and Copenhagen.
_Collage has become a major part of Lange’s work. I love this label design for Beaujolais Nouveau wine that he created, especially the handmade feel of it. Also, the humor in the title catches my attention. I’m not really sure of the purpose for the design other than for amusement, but I enjoy it all the same.

David Carson - Designer

_David Carson is an American born graphic designer, who is best known for his innovative magazine design and use of experimental typography. He is said to be one of the most influential graphic designer of the 1990s, with his widely known “grunge-typography”. He first started off as a professional surfer in the 1970s, received a bachelor of arts in sociology, but didn’t become renown for his design until the 90s.
_David also used this grunge typography in the design above, which is a poster design for President Obama’s 2009 inauguration. It was later used as a cover for a section in g2 magazine. I love the grunge look in his work. It makes it unique and handcrafted.

_Buchanan-Smith has also been the design director for Isaac Mizrahi’s fashion house. The two magazine covers above were created for Isaac Mizrahi’s Issac’s Style Book magazine series. Jonathan Barnbrook - Designer

_Jonathan Barnbrook is a British graphic designer, filmmaker, and typographer. He studied at Central St Martin’s and the Royal College of Art, both in London. He is most known for his cover design for David Bowie’s album Heathen and for his typeface designs. Barnbrook is also known to use his designs as “weapons for social change”.
_Barnbrook is one of the most well known designers in Japan. This piece is part of his design for the Mori Arts Center in Japan. I find this design extremely successful, particularly due to the way he incorporated five separate logos for the arts center into one single design. It’s very aesthetically pleasing.

David Airey - Designer

_David Airey is an Irish born designer who began studying design in 1995. After working at an internship in Pittsburgh, PA, he then landed a job at a Scottish newspaper. Design jobs were not readily available. He then became self-employed in May 2006. He now specializes in logo design and brand identities.
_Airey designed this logo for the Ireland brand of surf wear, Ganze, to appeal to 18-25 year old women. I really enjoy this logo, especially the way he made it so that each letter in the brand name seems to be made of the same form. The design principle that he uses is unity.

Reza Abedini - Designer

_Reza Abedini is an Iranian born graphic designer. He received a B.A. in painting from Tehran Art University in 1992, but has had a career as a graphic designer since 1989. He founded Reza Abedini Studio in Tehran, Iran in 1993. Abedini has become one of the most famous designers in Iran because of his use of modern Persian typography.
_The design above is Reza Abedini’s work for Rezvan Sadeghzadeh’s painting exhibition in 2004. I love his work, especially his silhouetted pieces like this. The drama that he creates with them interest me. In this piece, Abedini used the element of texture and the gestalt principle of figure/ground.

Bruce Mau - Designer

_Bruce Mau is a Canadian born designer who studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design, but left before graduating. Instead, he went on to join the Fifty Fingers design group, where he worked for two years. In later years, he established his won design studio called Bruce Mau Design.
_In the design above, Bruce and many other designers worked to create a new identity for OCAD U. I find this design extremely successful.  I love how, due to the open space in the composition, they can include multiple designs. The designers wanted to “reveal the extraordinary creative energy at OCAD U”, and I think they achieved that. They used the design element of isolation to emphasize the different sections of the design.

Chip Kidd - Designer

_Chip (Charles) Kidd is a Pennsylvania born author, editor, graphic designer best known for his book covers. He studied design at Penn State and was first hired by Knopf, a design house, as a junior assistant. He now works there as an associate art director.

_This work is Kidd’s book cover design for Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park novel. His design for this novel was so successful that it was carried over to the marketing for the film adaptation. I also think this design is extremely successful. I love the simplicity of it. In his design, he uses asymmetrical balance and figure/ground. He also uses the gestalt principle of similarity with the teeth of the dinosaur skeleton.
